The Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement provides grant funds to support an array of undergraduate scholarly engagement activities:
Academic Conference Presentation
A student travels to a regional, national, or international conference or symposium for the purposes of presenting the results of their faculty-mentored research. The purpose of this opportunity is to allow students to participate in professional development that will have an impact on their academic and/or career goals.
Academic Conference Attendance
A student travels to a regional, national, or international conference or symposium for the purposes of discernment, research, networking, or professional development. The purpose of this opportunity is to allow students to attend academic conferences to learn about a specific discipline or practice, even when they have no work to present.
A student applies a disciplinary or interdisciplinary methodology to investigate a specific hypothesis, problem, or question in collaboration with a faculty mentor and potentially others. The significance and originality of the research project should be such that the anticipated results could be incorporated into stand-alone or group presentations and publications.
A student produces substantial original works in any of various media, including film, television, theater; photography, painting, sculpture, and other studio art; play- and screenwriting; composition; musical and dramatic performance; and creative writing. Student artists ground their productions in systematic studies of art history, art theory, and the forms and media in which they are working, all of which engage traditional research methods. The student is self-directed in selecting the nature and scope of the project while working under the guidance of a faculty advisor or other professional mentor. Production of original work at an advanced level is the major focus of the project.
A student seeks to participate in a scholarly event that will immerse them in a specific discipline, field, or intellectual interest for the purposes of discerning their future path or enhancing their undergraduate coursework.
Academic Service Learning
A student participates in an academically-grounded service experience that is directly connected to their academic coursework and their future intellectual trajectory. The service must be clearly in line with the students’ future goals and grounded in the scholarship surrounding the problem the service seeks to address.
A student participates in a guided internship or practicum experience for the purpose of career or academic advancement. Internships must be clearly in line with the students’ future goals and grounded in the scholarship surrounding the chosen field.
Unpaid Research Assistantships
A student engages in a guided apprenticeship, externship, or practicum experience under the supervision of an approved mentor who interacts with the student on a frequent basis to discuss the student’s progress, experiences, and reflection on the activity. The student develops a working knowledge of the disciplinary literature relevant to the activity, maintains written documentation appropriate to his/her discipline, and submits a final project document that integrates the internship experience with his/her academic training. Assistantships can take place in a laboratory, a think-tank, or through individual work with a faculty mentor.
