Sophomore Sorin Scholar David Minogue has taken second place in the International Housewares Association's Global Innovation Awards for Excellence in Student Design for his design, the PullPal. David describes Pullpal in the following way:
PullPal is a device designed to help senior citizens safely walk their dogs by preventing excessive pulling and sudden jerking on the leash. Using a dog whistle triggered by a refillable air canister, PullPal interrupts unwanted pulling behaviors, reducing the risk of falls and injuries. The product is lightweight, ergonomic, and easy to use, with a non-slip grip and durable materials like ABS thermoplastic and polycarbonate. Unlike harmful choke chains or prong collars, PullPal offers a humane and effective alternative. It’s simple, portable, and requires no electrical power, making it ideal for seniors but useful for dog owners of all ages. PullPal is also environmentally friendly, made from recyclable materials, and uses refillable air canisters. Its clean, practical design makes dog walking safer and more enjoyable for seniors, supporting their independence and well-being.
The judges comments stated that David's design included great tech use and design, strong research and actionable insights, and impressive prototyping and design process.
