Fund Your Study Abroad

The following fellowships may allow students to pursue a wider range of study abroad options, including non-Notre Dame programs. Others will enable students receiving Pell Grants or other forms of need-based financial aid to study abroad by defraying the costs associated with international study.

Boren Scholarship

Up to $20,000 in funding for students interested in study abroad in a non-traditional location that includes the study of a language crucial to national security interests.  Awardees are required to secure a position working for the federal government in some capacity after graduation for at least one year.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program funds U.S. undergraduates with demonstrated financial need in the form of Pell Grants to study or intern abroad. The program provides up to $5,000 to defray the costs of study abroad during the spring, summer, fall, or academic year.

Critical Language Scholarship and Summer Language Abroad

The CLS places students in a fully-funded 10-week summer critical language institute in a country where the critical language is spoken. If you've identified a particular summer language institute for which you'd like to secure funding, consider the Summer Language Abroad program offered through the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures.

Freeman-ASIA

The Freeman-ASIA program provides need-based support for U.S.-based undergraduates planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures, and applicants are encouraged to promote study abroad in Asia when they return to their campus. The award offers up to $3,000 for summer funding, up to $5,000 for a semester, and up to $7,000 for the academic year.
