RSE Attribute Descriptions
See below for definitions of course attributes RSE1-5 and instructions regarding when it is appropriate to select each attribute for a course using CourseLeaf.
Please note that these attributes only apply to courses that involve independent work, typically under the guidance of a mentor. These will almost always be classes for which students need to make special arrangements with a faculty member or advisor in order to register. Typical courses with standard meeting times will generally not be eligible for these attributes. Courses that are eligible for RSE5 might be an exception, if the primary outcome of the course is the completion of a research project on which a student collaborates with a community partner.
Please direction questions to CUSE at cuse@nd.edu.

When to Select |
|
RSE1 - UG Research |
A student applies a disciplinary or interdisciplinary methodology to investigate a specific hypothesis, problem or question in collaboration with a faculty mentor and potentially others. The significance and originality of the research project should be such that the anticipated results could be incorporated into stand-alone or group presentations/publications. |
Select this attribute if the central focus of the course is an independent research project, including a senior thesis or capstone project, guided by a faculty member. A traditional course that culminates in a final research paper is not eligible for this attribute. Technique and methods courses are also not eligible. Examples of RSE1 courses: Senior Thesis, Undergraduate Research. Directed Research. |
|
RSE2-UG Critical Analysis |
A student studies the structure and workings of a discourse, cultural artifact, or institution that involves the use of a disciplinary or interdisciplinary methodology under the supervision of a faculty advisor. The scholarly study results in original interpretations or substantially new knowledge worthy of presentation or publication. Engaging in critical analysis is the major focus of the course. |
Select this attribute if the central focus of the course is critical analysis of a work or set of works, guided by a faculty member. Technique and methods courses are not eligible for this attribute. Examples of RSE2 courses: Directed Readings, Independent Study. |
|
RSE3-UGCreativeExpression |
A student produces substantial original works, meant for potential exhibition or publication, in any of various media, including film, photography, painting, sculpture, play- and screenwriting, composition, musical and dramatic performance, and creative writing. Student artists ground their productions in systematic studies of art history, of art theory, and of the forms and media in which they are working, all of which engage traditional research methods. The student is self-directed in selecting the nature and scope of the project, while working under the guidance of a faculty advisor or other professional mentor. Production of original work at an advanced level is the major focus of the course. |
Select this attribute if the central focus of the course is creation of an artwork, guided by a faculty member or non-University affiliated artist, meant for potential exhibition or publication. Technique and methods courses are not eligible for this attribute. Examples of RSE3 courses: Special Studies - Sculpture, BFA Thesis, Art Studio Internship. |
|
RSE4 - UGIntern/Practicum |
A student engages in a guided apprenticeship, externship, internship or practicum experience under the supervision of an approved mentor who interacts with the student on a frequent basis to discuss the student's progress, experiences and reflection on the activity. The student develops a working knowledge of the disciplinary literature relevant to the activity, maintains written documentation appropriate to his/her discipline, and submits a final project document that integrates the internship experience with his/her academic training. |
Select this attribute if the central focus of the course is an unpaid internship, practicum, or assistantship, conducted individually or in a small group, under the supervision of a professional in the field. Examples of RSE4 courses: Internship, Teaching Apprenticeship, Special Studies: Big Beam Contest. |
|
RSE5 - Community Engaged Research |
A student actively participates in sustained research throughout the course with a community organization, partner, or institution on a project or problem. The goal is to employ research skills to address community-identified needs with an eye toward positive social change. Disciplinary knowledge and methods inform the research and engaged experiences that students will be involved in. |
Select this attribute if the central focus of the course is conducting research in collaboration with a community organization. Examples of RSE5 courses: Mexican Immigration, CBL: Lang, Cult and Community, NEAR Science Workshop. |
